My Dog Zeke is so Happy Because Dixie's Treats come in Larger Sizes

If you remember, last week I wrote a post on fresh-baked dog biscuits from the Greenbrier Farm Market called Dixie's Treats.

Linda Montgomery makes these fresh-baked dog biscuits for her sister who owns the Greenbrier Farm Market. The biscuits were in two sizes.... small and somewhat larger biscuits. I said to the owner when I purchased a bag of the dog biscuits that my dog Zeke is a Chocolate Lab and would like larger biscuits.

Well on Friday, Linda delivered to my office two bags of Dixie's Treats, fresh-baked large dog biscuits. You can see by the below photo the Dixie Treats are much larger.

Dixie's Treats only have 4 ingredients: peanut butter, whole wheat flour, baking powder and skim milk. Because they have no preservatives, the dog biscuits should be refrigerated.

Zeke loves the larger fresh-baked dog biscuits, Dixie's Treats! Linda made these special for Zeke. THANK YOU LINDA!

See GVT's Hit Musical Cabaret, a Memorable Experience, Lewisburg WV

Friday night was the opening for Greenbrier Valley Theatre’s hit musical Cabaret. My husband and I attended and it was fantastic. Dinner, catered by Stella’s, consisted of traditional German fare. The dinner was delicious and the entertainment couldn't be better. If you don't have your tickets, get them quick as you do not want to miss this show.

It was indeed a memorable experience with a very talented cast and musicians. GVT’s space was converted into the world of the play, as the theatre transformed into the seedy Kit Kat Klub, the main backdrop for the show. In addition to the cast, all theatre staff – from box office employees to ushers and servers – were in costume for the show.

American writer Cliff Bradshaw travels to pre-World War II Berlin in search of inspiration. He finds that and more in Sally Bowles, an entertainer at a cabaret called the Kit Kat Klub. Bradshaw and Bowles fall in love but their lives are thrown into disarray with the increasing strength of Hitler’s Nazi Party. Based on the play I AM A CAMERA by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood, CABARET, which The Los Angeles Times refers to as an “eternally captivating musical,” has received 15 Tony Awards and eight Academy Awards.

The below video is an “Interview with GVT Artistic Director Cathey Sawyer” as she talks about the production of CABARET!

Gary Cooper, not the movie star, but the Photographer in Lewisburg WV

When one hears the name Gary Cooper, most automatically think of the movie star......

But, the Gary Cooper I am writing about is the one that is a photographer in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Although born in York, Alabama, he considers his home town as Mobile. “Most of my nature photography has been done since my wife Marilyn (a native West Virginian) and I moved to Lewisburg during the summer of 1991 following my retirement as Professor of Environmental Health at the University of Cincinnati,” says Cooper. He trained in neurophysiology and concentrated his research in neurotoxicology. Cooper has gone from studying the effects of heavy metals on the nervous system to photographing nature.

If he is not traveling on weekends to different counties of West Virginia photographing nature; he may be traveling in other parts of the world with his camera by his side. Gary has also been doing photography for the Greenbrier Valley Theatre’s performances for the past 15 years.

Gary’s photography is showcased in his wife’s gallery, Cooper Gallery of Fine Art. Approximately half of his images displayed at the gallery were originally recorded on film (negatives and transparencies), the remainder as digital files.

Cooper states, “regardless of whether the original image was made on film or digitally, most of the final prints were made with digital printers using pigment inks. Color photographs made with pigment inks have been shown to be more durable than those made with other types of printing media.”

“The French word “giclee” is often used to describe ink-jet images, particularly those made on canvas. However, the word has no qualitative connotations, so I do not use it.”

“Some people think that digital photographs such as many of these are not “real” because they have been greatly altered or “Photo Shopped”. Indeed, it is possible to alter an image to such an extent that the original is no longer recognizable, in which case it becomes “Computer Art”. On the other hand the alteration of images, intentionally or not, did not begin with computers and digital cameras. It just became easier. Almost all of the adjustments that I make to produce a final printed image could be accomplished by using traditional optical printing techniques.”

Gary says, “If the photographs give pleasure to the viewer, one of my main purposes will have been fulfilled. A higher purpose will be served, however, if they are a reminder that the natural beauty around us is fragile and must be protected if it is to endure.”

“Overpopulation, industrialization and mismanagement are destroying ecosystems worldwide at a pace that should alarm everyone. Although West Virginia has been relatively isolated and under populated, so that a large part of its natural beauty remains intact, complacency will be costly. If decisive action to reverse current trends is not taken soon, much of this beauty probably will not survive until the middle of the twenty-first century."

I love this snow scene and the Sycamore tree taken at Bartow in Pocahontas County.

This was the first picture we purchased....the New River Gorge National Park at Grandview of the New River. This is on our wall going down the steps and it seems you are walking right into the photo. One of Gary's best and, of course, one of our favorites.

The NHC at Oarkhurst Links in WV, Golf as it used to be!

The 15th National Hickory Championship (NHC) will be held at the historic Oakhurst Links in White Sulphur Springs, WV, near the famous Greenbrier Resort, June 7-9, 2012.

Oakhurst Links is America’s oldest documented golf course, first played in the early 1880s. It is the site of America’s first recognized golf competition, the Oakhurst Challenge.

The first organized golf club in America was in West Virginia. It all started in 1884, when a group of Scottish, English and American gentlemen gathered to play a game new to the United States. They laid out a nine hole course......the game, of course, was golf. They named the course "Oakhurst Links", after the estate of Russell Montague, where the course was designed. The men played regularly and competed annually on December 25 for the "Oakhurst Challenge Medal", which is recognized by the USGA as the earliest known golf prize in the United States. The tradition continues today with Oakhurst Links in White Sulphur Springs.

The National Hickory Championship was established in 1998 to bring together golfers who enjoy playing golf in historic conditions, the way it was played before the turn of the century. Playing according to 19th century rules and using authentic 19th century equipment makes the NHC the sternest test of hickory golf contested anywhere. Open to all, the NHC draws the most ardent and accomplished wood shaft golfers from across America and Canada. Competitive, yet fun, it is America’s hickory championship—the ultimate test of hickory golf.

The 2012 National Hickory Championship offers competition in four divisions: the Open Division, the Men’s and Women’s Reserve Divisions, the Sporting Division. Contestants in the Championship play 36 holes in two days. Clubs must be original 19th century or approved replicas (available at Oakhurst, no charge, if you don’t have your own set) and all players use the same modern-made, low-compression gutta percha-type balls supplied by the Championship. Tee shots are struck from sand tees. No golf bags are allowed so players carry clubs under their arm in the manner of the 1880s.

There is a simple dress code. Although period costumes are not required, many golfers dress appropriately and prizes are presented to the “best dressed.” The NHC is like no other hickory golf tournament here, in Britain or anywhere else in the world; it is authentic, competitive, historic, truly unique and, above all, fun!

As far as spectators go, there is no admission charge. Visitors are allowed to walk on the course during play as long as they don’t interfere with the golf. Photos are allowed.

This event is well-worth attending and is one of the premier hickory events in the United States. Set in the beautiful mountain country of West Virginia. Don't miss this opportunity to play or see golf.... as it used to be!

Fresh-baked Dog Biscuits at the Greenbrier Farm Market

Last week while visiting the Greenbrier Farm Market, I found Dixie Treats, fresh-baked dog biscuits.

Dixie Treats, fresh-baked dog biscuits only have 4 ingredients... peanut butter, whole wheat flour, baking powder and skim milk. Because they have no preservatives, the dog biscuits should be refrigerated. They come in two sizes, one for larger dogs and one for the little guys. The biscuits smell so delicious I could eat them.

Nancy Wardwell, owner of the Greenbrier Farm Market, says her sister Linda makes the dog biscuits with tender love and care and are named after her Border Collie, Dixie.

The photo on the insert that comes with each bag of biscuits is Dixie with her kerchief around her neck. Linda has a different scarf for Dixie for each day of the month and every holiday. Linda says, “Dixie is a sight for sore eyes when she visits all the residents of the Brier Nursing home where our Uncle Howard resides at age 91.”

“The dog biscuits are flying out the door and we cannot seem to keep them in stock. Everyone likes to give their pooch a nice treat and these are very healthy and delicious”, states Nancy.

So when you are at the Greenbrier Farm Market buying fresh baked-goods, like sourdough bread, sourdough biscuits, New York style cheesecake with or without fresh-cut strawberries on top, butter crunch and chocolate-chip pecan brickle cookies, zuchunni muffins, or pasta, butterscotch and apple sauce, or other locally made products.... don’t forget your pets. They will LOVE the fresh-baked dog biscuits. My dog Zeke does!

When you come for a visit stay at this bed and breakfast

If you are plannning a trip to White Sulphur Springs or Lewisburg, West Virginia, you may want to stay at the James Wylie House Bed and Breakfast and log cabin guest house.

Monica Foos is the owner of this B&B located in Greenbrier County. Just down the road, about a mile, is the beautiful Greenbrier Resort.

My husband and I stayed at this B&B a few times in 2005 while our home was being built in Lewisburg. Staying at the James Wylie House, was a great way to get to know the community. And, yes so much more personal than any hotel.....our visits at the B&B were like visiting a family member.....We always felt so welcomed.

We always looked forward to staying at the James Wylie House because of Monica. She would always give us the news in both Lewisburg and White Sulphur Springs. She would sit with us and tell of stories of the area, and places to visit. It was always a delight visiting the James Wylie House and, of course, having a great conversation with Monica.

Monica is such a sweet, warm and intelligent woman, and can do most anything when it comes to keeping this B&B in shape. She bought this B&B house ten years ago, and it has been a B&B for 20 years now. The James Wylie House is a historical, 190 year old house. Built in 1819 by master builder John Dunn, the house began life as a farmhouse with over 1,300 acres of land.

The log cabin that is located behind the main House was built in the early 1790's and was built for the original owners to live in while the main house was being built. I've taken a tour of this beautiful cabin and it is just right for a wonderful get away experience for the entire family.

When we asked Monica what brought her to White Sulphur Springs. She stated .... "Being from Baltimore, Maryland, I just wanted to move to a small town and run a B&B, and in 1999 I became the owner of the James Wylie House". Monica is not only the owner, but the manager, maintenance, housekeeper, and cook. She has no staff...she doess it ALL. Monica is truly amazing, she is not only good in the kitchen, but can handle tools like no woman I know.

Monica loves to quilt, and enjoys having small craft groups stay for a weekend retreat in the mountains. To the left is a photo of a group from Maryland. Monica is pictured on the left.

For nearly 190 years, this beautiful home has hosted the many travelers visiting the Greenbrier County, golfing on the many renowned courses, and hiking in the surrounding State and National Forests. The Greenbrier Valley, rich in Civil War history and outdoor adventures, offers guests a wide array of activities from ghost tours to mountain biking, from historic golf courses to caving.

There are some great experiences in this great Greenbrier County....spend a day picnicking, browsing the many local shops and art galleries, fish one of the nearby lakes or streams, or take a wild ride white water rafting. There is something for everyone!

The location to the James Wylie House is easy to find. You can take the Amtrak train to White Sulphur Springs from Washington, D.C. and Cincinnati, Ohio. When you travel by train you can relax, and enjoy the country views. Below is contact information for The James Wylie House:

Habitat Volunteers Start Second Women Build House in Greenbrier County

On Saturday, May 12, volunteers arrived at Habitat’s Summer Elms development at 9:00 AM to start on the Second Women Build house in White Sulphur Springs, WV.

The speaker for the event was Lynn Swann, White Sulphur Springs Council woman, Marketing Director at the Homestead Resort, and a Habitat volunteer. She read a Proclamation from West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin declaring the week May 5-13 as National Women Build Week in West Virginia.

About eighteen women, ages 7 to 70 took part, including representatives from Lowe's and Experience Works. Volunteers for the day were:

Patricia Sams, Future Habitat homeowner; Lynn Swann, Emily Swann, Jocelyn Hanna, Ann Canterbury, Boots Tuckweller, Kim Kowalkowski, Gail Conley, and David Fuller. Lowes Representatives were: Jackie Pleasant, Jackie Dilley, Lauren Antommaria, Melanie Osborne, Tammi Lloyd, and Melinda Fox. Experience Works volunteers were: Jettina Davis, Jeannie Collins & Peggy Miller.

While I was taking photos, the volunteers were removing dirt, and carrying, measuring, and cutting footers.....they were very busy bees! Jerry Walls from Pendleton County was on hand to guide the volunteers.

The volunteers finished laying the footers for Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity’s two new houses, one of which is the Women Build house. In the coming weeks, the Women Build volunteers will pour concrete on the footers, lay the radiant hose, and then, raise the walls.

West Virginia is my home

West Virginia a great place to live, work, and raise a family, and a perfect retirement area! I was born and raised in West Virginia, but left the state to work in Washington, DC for 35 years. I never realized how much I missed the mountains, until I came back home to West Virginia.

Come visit, wild and wonderful West Virginia, you just may want to stay!

A few West Virginia facts:

West Virginia was proclaimed a state in 1863. “West Virginia Day” became a legal holiday in 1927.

Stone that was quarried near Hinton was contributed by West Virginia for the Washington Monument and arrived in Washington in February 1885.

The first brick street in the world was laid in Charleston, WV, on October 23, 1870, on Summers Street, between Kanawha and Virginia Streets.

White Sulphur Springs, Greenbrier County, was the first "summer White House."

The first rural free mail delivery was started in Charles Town, WV, on October 6, 1896, and then spread throughout the United States.

One of the first suspension bridges in the world was completed in Wheeling, WV, in November 1849.

A variety of the yellow apple, the Golden Delicious, originated in Clay County, WV. The original Grimes Golden Apple Tree was discovered in 1775 near Wellsburg.

The Golden Delicious Apple was designated as the official state fruit by the Legislature on February 20, 1995.
