The Greenbrier’s 2nd Annual Winterfest Weekend was held on January 6-8 and featured nationally recognized ice carvers competing in individual and team carving competitions.
The winner for the individual competition went to Aaron Costic winning the Gold Medal with the ice sculpture "Wild Hare". The prize was $2,000.

The team competition winners were Aaron Costic and Jeff Meyers winning the Gold Medal for the ice sculpture "Apollo's Steed". The winners received $2,000.

The temperature was in the high 40s and low 50s for this 3-day event, as compared to last year's freezing temperature. Below are the photos of the other ice scupltures in the competition:

Even though the two photos below were beginning to melt and break, you can still see the great detail in the sculptures. The below sculpture of a hand had a dragonfly on the forefinger, but with the warm weather, the ice was melting and breaking.
Part of the wing broke off of this beautiful sculpture.

The lifetime of an ice sculpture is determined primarily by the temperature of its environment and thus, an ice sculpture can last from mere minutes to possibly months.

Roy, thank you and have a great Sunday!
Rebecca: Those are amazing. Incredible detail that can disappear (literally) in under an hour.
Rebecca, what an interesting event to attend, and with those warm days, amazing they did not all melt.
Rebecca, Which one won? Were there different categories? How lovely!
Rebecca, I tried to pick my fav but could not. They are all incredible. I can't believe it is that cold there. We hardly ever get below freezing. I am glad...we like wood burning fireplaces....it must take much more wood to stay warm where you live. Beautiful sculptures!
Anita, ah and to see those details melt away is sad.
Joan, I wish I had attended Saturday as I may have gotten photos of the winners.
Marge, I added the winners (thanks forgot to add them as I was focusing on the photos). No categories, just individual competition and team competition.
Jeanean, it is hard to pick a favorite, and sorry I did not get photos of all the entries especially the winners. It has so far been a mild winter for us, compared to last year when we had sooo much snow.
Rebecca, Thanks for sharing, Ice sculptures require an amazing talent, and deliver such beauty!
Rebecca,
Ice scultping is so beautiful. I have watched in person and on television. What an art form that last for only a while. The same goes for san sculpting. We have an artist on the beach that creates sculptures frrom diftwood, shells and other things he picks up, and then lets the tide destroy it. A
I love wthe dog with balancing the bone! I am so impressed with scupting - those artists are pretty amazing to go from a block of something and have the vision and expertise to form it into something amazing. -Kasey
Absolutely AMAZING!!! I saw a sand castle competition, it left me breathless like your pics above. Thanks for sharing.
Those are incredible, Rebecca. What an interesting event-I'm sure everyone enjoyed it.
Looks like this was a big competition because there were certainly many quality contenders as these photos show.
We have enjoyed seeing ice sculptures many times and it's just so amazing how creative these "artists" are knowing their works will only last a short time...but so pretty!
Hi Ellen, they certainly do.
Alexandra, sand sculpting is also so awesome and can be destroyed instantly.
Kasey, it is amazing to see a block of ice transform into an art of beauty like the dog with the bone.
Ron, Thanks for stopping by and I love to watch sand sculpting as well.
Toni, this was the second competition held at the Greenbrier, always enjoyable.
Vickie, I believe there were 16 competitors.
Larry & Sheila, so so amazing !!
Howdy and afternoon Rebecca
Rebecca my friend, folks sure do have a mighty enjoyable time attending the Winterfest of their community. Those sure are mighty good looking ice sculptures in you mighty fine photos.
Have a good one
Dale in New Hampshire
Stunning works of art, Rebecca - so unfortunate that they are so temporary! Thank goodness we have your pictures to admire. I love the one with dog and bone - but the first price (steed) one is magnificent!
Dale, thanks as you can see the weather didn't co-operate with this event :)
Karen, I agree Apollo Steed is magnificient. The horse's head fell off by the end of the event.
Oh, how beautiful these were...while I love both ice and snow sculptures, there is something about the "crystal" effect of the ice that I really like. I keep thinking I should come over for that competition - maybe next year! Hope you are having a wonderful New Year.
Susan, if you attend next year, please let me know so we can meet up.
