The Greenbrier’s 2nd Annual Winterfest Weekend, January 6-8, will feature nationally recognized ice carvers vying in individual and team carving competitions.
As an added treat, the state’s only synchronized skating team, West Virginia Synchro, will perform on Saturday and Sunday. The competitions and performances are free and open to the public.
The National Ice Carving Association sanctioned event will be held on the front lawn. Sixteen of the country’s best ice carvers, including several Olympic medal winners, will compete for individual and team honors.
On Friday from 1:00-5:00 pm, five talented carvers will each transform a block of ice into their own creation as a thank you to our sponsors.
The team competition will be held on Saturday from 9:00 am-2:00 pm, as six, two-man teams will create sculptures from four blocks of ice in just five hours. For Sunday’s individual competition from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, 15 carvers will design individual masterpieces from two blocks in four hours. See more photos of ice sculptors from last year's competition.
West Virginia Synchro will perform at 11:30 am and 3:30 pm Saturday and again at 11:30 am Sunday. Following each performance, the skaters will offer quick lessons and skating tips to children of all ages. The daily ice rink pass is $20 per adult and $12 per child (ages 12 and under) and skate rentals fees are $16 per adult and $10 per child.
The Greenbrier’s 70’ x 140’ ice skating rink is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm, Friday from 4:00 to 10:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am to 10:00 pm and Sunday 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.

The Ice Carving Competition is something I would love to see, your photos are amazing. Would love to see the Synchro too.
Happy new Year to you! Love this post about the ice carvings...we were at the annual winter carnival in Quebec City two years ago were just in awe at what some of these artists can do with ice! Just beautiful.
Rebecca .....That would be great to see ...especially the ice carving ....it's always amazed me that people have that much talent! I also hope we can stay at the Greenbrier someday!
Congrats on the big win over Clemson!
Rebecca, I love these type events, they are so creative! I heard it is a bit chilly on the East coast, this may help keep the ice frozen!
Christine, it is fun to watch and I will be attending to take photos.
John, thank you and glad you are back in the Rain.
Dale, the weather here is 50 degrees today...but, it should be colder tomorrow..don't want the ice carvings melting :)
Roger, thank you and I hope to get photos of this year;s competition.
Susan, and Happy new year to you as well. Ice carving is really great art!
Rob, check out my post on the Virginia tribute package which is for anyone...great prices. GO MOUNTAINEERS!
Joan, today it is 50 degrees, but hope the temps go down for the ice carvings.
Rebecca, There is always something happening at the Greenbrier. I recently read a blog about sand artists. These ice carvings are truly amazing. I marvel at the creative talent of the artists. I also happen to like ice skating. More truly talented people.
Kathleen, yes the Greenbrier is a happening and fun place!
Its so amazing what beautiful sculptures they can make from frozen water! Another great Localism post on the Greenbrier and the WV mountains!
Lee & Carol, thank you .. I didn't get a chance to go on Saturday, but plan to go Sunday...oh that's today :)
Rebecca, this is so beautiful but it looks so cold. Hope you are bundling up and staying warm. No ice sculptures here and I must say that while I enjoy seeing them from your post, I am glad we don't have the conditions for such art. Happy Sunday!
I love it, everytime we go on a cruise they do this as well and it is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing Rebecca
Jeanean, just returned from the Greenbrier to see the ice carving. Got there late and it was over. So started taking photos...problem was with the warm temps 50 degrees, the ice was melting and some of the sculptures were already broken....
Joyce, they have ice carving on ships.. .wow must be cold in the room they sculpt the ice.
