We all receive emails from family and friends, a mixture of jokes, political statements, etc. Today, I received a poem on "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer. As one who doesn't know much about poetry, I found this poem beautiful and wanted to know more about this person named Joyce Kilmer. Searching for this Joyce Kilmer, I found that his name was Alfred Joyce Kilmer and there was a living memorial forest named after him......the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.
The memorial forest is an outstanding example of a cove hardwood forest -- a forest characterized by rich, thick soils; abundant moisture; and a variety of flora. In 1935, the regional forester wrote the Chief of the Forest Service that the forest was one of the "very few remaining tracts of virgin hardwood in the Appalachians...(and) we ought to buy it to preserve some of the forest original growth in the Appalachians." In 1936, the Forest Service bought 13,055 acres for the lofty sum of $28 per acre (at a time when most land was going for $3 to $4 per acre). While most of the surrounding land was logged, the area around Little Santeetlah Creek was spared -- protected by a recognition of its uniqueness and the drastic drop of lumber prices after the "crash of '29."
Veterans of the Foreign Wars asked the government to set aside a fitting stand of trees to serve as a living memorial to Joyce Kilmer, who was killed in action during World War I. Although Kilmer was both a soldier and a poet, he is most remembered for his poetry about common, beautiful things in nature. Kilmer's best known poem is "Trees."
Who was Joyce Kilmer....From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia...."Though a prolific poet whose works celebrated the common beauty of the natural world as well as his religious faith, Kilmer is remembered most for a short poem entitled "Trees" (1913)"

Lori....you are welcome! I also educated myself about Joyce Kilmer.
You're right, that IS a great poem. I think you've just inspired a post for the garden club website which I maintain.
Margaret, glad to have inspired you :)
Rebecca - I just found you via Michael Thornton...This is one of my all time favorite poems. My husband and I go camping in Murphy NC every year, which is only about a 30 minute drive from the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Park. You have just captured my heart! It is one of our all time favorite places with trees that seem to go up for miles and so big around you can't imagine...HUGE! Thanks for sharing this bit of information and for bringing my memories back to life. Can't wait to get there again this winter! Thank You!
Amy,I haven't been to this park, but planning a trip there to see this great place.
Hello Rebecca, some very unusual looking trees to say the least. I do know the poem, but I have to admit that I don't know a lot about Kilmer. I do share his love of trees though and thanks for the video.
Nick, they certainy are very unusual trees!
The first time I heard this poem I was a kid. Had you heard this poem before? That video had the most interesting trees I have ever seen!
Debra, I had never heard of this poem until I received it in an email. I researched Joyce Kilmer and went to youtube for a video...and I agree it's an interesting video on trees.
