Stepping Back in Time - A Humpback Covered Bridge in Covington, Virginia

Humpback Covered Bridge, Covington VAWe were in Covington, Virginia, with some friends sightseeing over the weekend.  Our first stop was the Falling Spring Falls, a majestic waterfall.  Then our friends suggested another place to visit near Covington.....the Humpback Covered Bridge

We had passed this exit many times on Interstate 64  traveling to our home in Lewisburg, WV.  What a site to behold.  Visiting this area was like stepping back in time...truly amazing.

The bridge is located on a 5-acre wayside park that includes a parking area, restrooms, a picnic area and access to Dunlap Creek. The park was very clean with many families having cook outs and/or swimming in the clean, clear water of Dunlap Creek.

Humpback Covered Bridge, Covington VA

From Wikipedia:   The Humpback Covered Bridge located in the U.S. state of Virginia, is one of the few remaining covered bridges in the United States that was built higher in the middle than on either end; hence the name of "humpback". The bridge was built in 1857 and is also the oldest remaining covered bridge in the state of Virginia. Its WGCB number is 46-03-01. The bridge spans a tributary of the Jackson River known as Dunlap Creek, for a distance of 109 feet (33 m). The humpback feature is 4 feet (1.2 m) higher in the center than at either end. The bridge is located near the city of Covington, Virginia.

Directions to the Humpback Covered Bridge: From Interstate 64 take Exit 10 to Route 60 and go one-half mile East, or take Route 60 West from Covington.

If you get a chance, stop by to view the bridge, have a picnic,  take a swim...or just relax on the grass.  Whatever your fancy...just enjoy and get lost in time.

Hi Rebecca-What a wonderful place. Covered bridges do take you back in time. I also love the video of the Falling Spring Falls. Very cool. Didn't know you could rappel down a waterfall. Very exhilarating. Have a super weekend. <SMILE>

Judy, it is a very nice place to visit.

Jim & Maria, indeed it is.

Pat, I   believe there are only a few covered humpback bridges, and this is supposedly the oldest.

Sharon, This was a great weekend to see the bridge and waterfall.

I love visiting these kinds of places for the same reason you said "It is like stepping back in time" and that is something that is just fascinating to me. I swear sometimes, you can actually hear the voices from the past.

Todd, I agree with you.  When visiting sites, if one would be very still and listen--  kinda spooky.

I got to go over a covered bridge in New Hampshire a couple of decades ago. I thought it was far better than going over some of these nondescript modern bridges.

Russel, I love covered bridges and agree about the modern bridges of today.
