Greenbrier Valley Theatre's  Art and Benefit Auction

GVT

The Greenbrier Valley Theatre, the State Professional Theater of West Virginia, held its 16th Annual Art and Benefit Auction on Saturday, July 17, 2010.  The auction was a huge success.

GVT Art and Benefit AuctionThere was a wine and Hors D'oeuvre preview party held one hour before the auction which provided attendees time to browse the artwork in advance.  The admission was $10 and was applied to any art auction purchase.

Besides the silent auction items, there were over 100 items auctioned that included oil and watercolor paintings, sculptures, jewelry, golf packages, and different pieces of furniture that was hand painted with beautiful designs, and much, much more!

Tavern 1785, a Historic Restaurant, Located in Lewisburg, West Virginia

Tavern 1785, a historic restaurant located in Lewisburg, WV

The Tavern 1785, is over 200 years old and offers a unique dining experience with antiques and civil war memorabilia and a menu covering a broad range of cuisines.  In the spring and summer you can enjoy the outdoor dining in the beautiful gardens.  Or, in the winter in one of the cozy rooms with a fireplace.  Catering and private parties are also available.

Tavern 1785Tavern 1785Tavern 1785

The Tavern 1785 was the “Mayor Foster House”  built after 1783, when John McClanahan bought the land from the Virginia Land Company.  The core of the structure consists of two hewn oak log buildings joined by a framed portion called the dog-trot.  This area was left open to separate the living quarters from the kitchen in case of fire.  Evidence in the attic and stone basement suggest that the cabin on the old Midland Trail side (Washington Street) was built first, with the second cabin being added shortly after.

The exterior of the logs were exposed for a short time before clapboards covered them.  Covering the logs was not only a sign of refinement and status, but also has the practical value of weatherproofing, as the clay chinking typically had to be redone every few years.  The interior logs were covered as soon as possible, though they have been uncovered more recently in the back cabin and the dog-trot.

The original roofing material was split oak shelves, some of which are still visible in the attic.  The standing metal roof was probably added when the original shakes began to fail.

There are three masonry chimneys in the older part of the house.  Although they are all made of locally fired brick, the chimney at the rear of the back cabin has a stone base with a height of eight feet.  This chimney and its larger hearth indicate that it was probably used for cooking and that the first floor of the back cabin was originally the kitchen.  The other hearths are small and shallow, and therefore designed for heat.

Sometime in the latter half of the 1800s, a framed addition filling in the L formed by the two log buildings (the dog-trot) was built.  This is dated by the fact that neither rip nor vertical sawn lumber was used, but circular sawn lumber, which became available only when larger water or steam driven mills became established in the area.

A two-story porch was added and then enclosed later to facilitate a modern kitchen and exterior stairs were added for rental purposes.  This building was a home until 1998 when it was converted to a restaurant.  During that time, it was not lived in much, but did have several interesting owners.

In 1814, Luke Bowyer owned the house along with a much older and smaller version of what it is now The Greenbrier.  Mayor William Foster owned the house and lived in it along with his family.  A Justice of the Peace, appointed by Thomas Jefferson, then Governor of Virginia, lived in the house as well.

The house, now the Tavern 1785 restaurant, is owned by Tony Juker.  Check out the slide show below to view the dining areas of this quaint log cabin...Tavern 1785:

The Greenbrier and Delta Kicks-Off Direct Air Service from New York and Atlanta for the Greenbrier Valley in West Virginia

On Thursday, June 10, 2010,  Delta and The Greenbrier launched daily, non-stop air service to Greenbrier Valley Airport from Atlanta and New York's LaGuardia launching year-round flights from two of the nation's largest cities to The Greenbrier on Delta Air Lines.

speakersJim Justice, chairman and owner of The Greenbrier; Governor Joe Manchin III; Senator Jesse Guills; and, Betty Crooksjanks, president of the Greenbrier  County Commission along with numerous local business and political leaders were present at the airport to celebrate the first flight and welcome passengers.  Justice was instrumental in bringing the flights to Greenbrier Vallkey to facilitate travel to the luxury resort and to support the region's economic growth.

"Our agreement with Delta Air Lines brings a level of travel convenience to The Greenbrier previously unseen," said Jim Justice. "These flights make it easier for people across the United States and Europe to visit.  There is so much excitement now, with our new entertainment complex, restaurants and upscale retail boutiques, and of course, The Greenbrier Classic."

The new flights will utilize the CRJ-200  aircraft, a 50-seat regional jet, and shuttle passengers on the approximately hour and a half flight from both destinations.  The flight schedule will be:

Atlanta

  • Departs ATL at 10:50 AM     Arriving LWB at 12:18 PM

In celebration of the new flights, The Greenbrier is offering discounts on reservations when guests book airfare through Delta.  Accommodations will start at $99 per night, including $25 free casino slot play coupon per room, 20 percent off one round of golf for two, and 10 percent off at The Greenbrier spa for two, with proof of a Delta ticket.  Reservations must be made by June 30 for travel through August 31, 2010.

Passengers were personally greeted as they arrived by Jim Justice, owner of The Greenbrier, and Governor Manchin, and given welcoming gifts from the resort, the West Virginia Division of Tourism, Greenbrier County Convention and Visitors Bureau

Washington Street Strutters

and Greater Greenbrier Chamber of Commerce.  As passengers were entering the terminal, The Washington Street Strutters played "Country Roads Take Me Home,"  and The Greenbrier provided a light lunch of sandwiches, drinks, etc.

A fantastic Air Show was performed after the ceremony

by Scott Yoke in his silver plane.

"Anybody and everybody loves Greenbrier Valley when they get here, but it's been an obstacle course to get here," Justice said.  "We've solved that today with the first flights from Atlanta and New York."

Do You Have a Good Veterinarian? If not, Check Out the Greenbrier Veterinary Hospital for All Your Pets Needs

Looking for a veterinarian for your pet?  My husband and I acquired our chocolate lab, Zeke, from a neighbor that was moving out of the area.  At that time, Zeke was almost a year old.  Being  new in the area, we decided to continued taking Zeke to the Greenbrier Veterinary Hospital Greenbrier Veterinarian Hospital(GVH) that his previous owners used.  We are glad we did.  The doctors and staff at GVH are so good with Zeke.  In fact, when we take Zeke in for a doctor’s visit, grooming or boarding he goes right to the door to go back to the pet area, and he never looks back so we can say goodbye.  This tells us that he likes it at GVH and is well cared for.

Dr. John R. Wilson, DVM

The Greenbrier Veterinary Hospital was founded by Dr. John R. Wilson more than thirty years ago after graduating from Ohio State University. Dr. Wilson performs most of the hospital's orthopedic surgeries, including bone plating and pinning, cruciate repairs, and disc surgery.

Greenbrier Veterinary Hospital is an accredited American Animal Hospital Association.......a full service veterinary hospital for small animals, offering boarding and grooming as well as complete medical care.  For more information go to GHV's services.

Recently, GVH provided an important and complimentary service to their customers …. a Pet Portal.  This is a secure, private pet health website that provides direct access to manage your pet’s health 24/7.  With this Pet Portal, we can:

  • View our pet's health information

The Greenbrier Valley Theatre Opens the Season With "The 39 Steps"

The Greenbrier Valley Theatre (GVT) is West Virginia's official year-round professional theatre.  GVT's,  first performance for the season is "The 39 Steps"  This version of The 39 Steps is based on John Buchan's ground-breaking novel, Alfred Hitchcock's iconic movie and the exquisite idea of two Northern English writers Nobby Dimon and Simon Corble of doing the whole play with just four actors.    The play is directed by Cathey Sawyer, and stars Kurtis Donnelly, Betsy Graver, Paul Orwick, and Michael Sharp.

The Greenbrier Valley Theatre

This ingenious take off on Hitchcock's 1935 thriller is a fast-paced whodunit packed with mystery, romance, and mayhem as four actors take on over 150 characters.  When an ordinary man, Richard Hannay, meets a woman who says she's a spy and takes her home, he soon finds that he has traded his ordinary life for one of murder and intrigue.  Part thriller and part slapstick, The 39 Steps promises an evening of nonstop pleasure and virtuoso performances.

Lewisburg WVLewisburg was officially founded in 1782 though its origin can be traced back to 1751 when Andrew Lewis, a young surveyor for the Greenbrier Land Company camped near a spring, now called the Lewis Spring.

Lewisburg is one of the oldest towns in West Virginia.  Originally called “The Savannah,” then “Fort Savannah,” then “Camp Union,” it was finally named “Lewisburg” in honor of Gen. Andrew Lewis.  The town was incorporated in 1782 making it the fourth town in what is now West Virginia.
