Have you ever wanted to open a retail shop? A Business Opportunity in Lewisburg, WV

Have you ever wanted to open a retail shop?  If you have been following my blog, you know that John Hirt, owner/developer of Stella's Tea House is also opening the upcoming Livery Tavern restaurant in Lewisburg, WV.

John is also developing the vacant land behind the Livery Tavern and designing a promenade of retail shops with the potential for apartments above them.  There are also three houses on the property being developed that he plans to rent out as retail stores.

John says, "For those who have ever wanted to open a retail shop.... here's their chance. I want to give people an opportunity to try their hand at the retail experience.  The shops will be 500-750 sq. ft. in size with each shop having a porch with benches and surrounded by trees and flowers."

The seating capacity for this new restaurant will be approximately 100, with outside seating at the side Pavilion and at the front of the restaurant.  There will be a full bar with an extensive wine list.  It is also planned for local musicians to provide entertainment on weekends.

The Livery Tavern restaurant will be opening in February 2012.

The development of the retail shops will begin sometime in 2012.

Part 6, New Businesses in Lewisburg, WV | Biscuits & Bones

bluildingBiscuit & Bones is a gift shop for pets and their people too!  The owners, Janice and Brian Mollet, opened their new business, Biscuit & Bones January 2011.

Bryan and Janice moved to West Virginia from Long Island, NY in 2010.  In New York, they owned and operated a very large boarding kennel and grooming salon for 20 years.  Janice has been a professional dog groomer, trainer, and has shown numerous different breeds in the show ring.

After selling their kennel and wanting to move to a more rural setting, they found a beautiful log home in Crawley, WV ..... with 20 acres for their six dogs, four cats, and two horses to roam. But after two years, they missed the interaction of dealing with people and their pets.

While visiting Lewisburg and all the town shops, Janice and Brian noticed that almost every shop they entered had a dog mascot.  They realized that Lewisburg was a very dog-friendly town, and that Lewisburg needed a gift shop where people could show off their love for their pets.  And, so Biscuit & Bones became a reality.  Janice had been collecting art work and signage of different breeds her whole life, and half of the store has merchandise pet owners can purchase to show off their love of their pet.

A year before Biscuits & Bones opened, Brian adopted an Irish wolfhound, named Murphy.  Murphy had many eating and digestive problems.  So, Brian began cooking and baking for Murphy.   Janice said, “Murphy loved the homemade biscuits, and the word spread through all our canine friends.”

Bones & Biscuits BarkeryThe other half of Biscuits & Bones store is the “Barkery”,  with a full kitchenJanice says , "since Brian loves to be in the kitchen, he bakes fresh biscuits daily.  Many of our local canine friends come in weekly for their stash of biscuits.”

10.  Murphy's Meal is 100% chicken, rice, sweet potatoes, green beans, carrots and spinach.  It is a special treat, not to be fed as a complete meal, but as a treat, or mix a few tablespoons of Murphy’s Meal in their dog food; great for finicky eaters, and pets recuperating from an illness.  There are no additives or preservatives in the meal.

You Will Find Antiques and Wine at Robert's Antiques in Lewisburg, WV

Robert's Antiques has been in business for 20 years and is located in downtown Lewisburg.  Owners Robert and Mary Jane Hamilton still help out at the shop, but their son Robbie has taken over the family business.

I was very impressed with the changes Robbie has made to the shop.  It is very spacious and open with many antiques throughout.  There are rooms full of antiques that come from estate sales, auctions and the Internet.  Robert’s Antiques is one of the biggest antique stores in Lewisburg and in the Greenbrier County.

Besides selling antiques, Robert's also opened a wine shop located in the front of the store named Hamilton’s Wine Shop.  The wine shop was opened in October, 2009.   Hamilton’s is the largest wine shop in Lewisburg and has the finest selections of specialty wines, domestic and imported. There is also a walk-in wine cellar. The wine prices start at $2.99 and go up to $1,200 a bottle.  If you can’t find your favorite wine, don’t worry……special order's are encouraged.

OakTreeThe first thing you see when you walk into Edith’s Health and Specialty Store is a large Oak Tree.  The building was owned by Paula Greer who ran the Lewisburg Florist Shop.  Paula, when renovating added an Oak tree in the middle of the store.  Edith feels like it was done for her as it is “A Tree of Life” so perfect for her business and thanks Paula for her foresight for adding a tree in the store.  Edith says it is “the only oak tree in the middle of town and is located in the center of my store”.  Edith purchased the building and moved to this new location two years ago.

The store is spacious, considering there is a tree in it, and there is a downstairs or the root cellar as Edith calls it since the base of the tree is there.

At Edith’s you will find not only an extensive supply, but a very good quality of supplements from very reputable distributors.  She not only sells supplements, but healthy food and healthy skin care.  "Anything that gets absorbed through your skin goes into your bloodstream", says Edith "and you shouldn’t put anything on your skin that you are not willing to eat."

Other items you will find at Edith's are, dairy free and other special diet foods (gluten-free and Vegan), health pet foods, laundry detergent and cleaning supplies, body care products, and local West Virginia products that makes great gifts, books on nutrition and some cookbooks.

If you love to try different teas or coffee, you will find a wall full of different ones to satisfy your taste buds.

“More and more customers, about 20%, are asking for gluten-free products,” says Edith.  “More people are eating vegetarian only and we get a lot of request for Vegan products (animal-free products).”

In the root cellar you will find a wall of spices and herbs, bulk dried goods and nuts, seeds, beans, rice, cornmeal and flour. And, an abundant supply of household cleaning supplies

Edith with 24 years of experience runs a well-maintained store.  She says “customers are our best teachers, they tell us what products works and what doesn’t work. ….”
