I am a coal miner's daughter and know the dangers of coal mining. My dad started working at the age of 12 to help support his family. Dad was born in West Virginia, but his parents were from Budapest, Hungary. Dad would tell stories of when he first started in the mines.....when miners use to crawl on their belly to get to coal. I remember how my mom use to worry about him working in the mines. We were very lucky that he came home every day. Not to say there weren't any accidents, but nothing like we heard about this week,

To date 25 coal miners have been killed and four are still missing in the Upper Big Branch Mine, Raleigh County mine explosion. This is the worse mine disaster since the Sago mine explosion, Jan 2, 2006, that killed 12 miners.
The New York Times reported...."More than 100,000 coal miners have been killed in accidents in the United States since 1900, but the number of fatalities has fallen sharply in recent decades, the Mine Safety and Health Administration says. As late as the 1940s, it was not unusual to have more than 1,000 mining deaths a year; in 2009, there were 35 mining deaths, according to the agency."
Please pray for the dead miners and their families and for the four missing and their families. One miner that was killed was planning to retire in five weeks.
