Paying It Forward for a Friend and the Brain Tumor Institute at Children's National Medical Center.
In May, 2010, Mike Windsor, a very dear friend of ours died of brain cancer. In his honor, his family held the first annual Mike Windsor Memorial Golf Tournament benefiting the Brain Tumor Institute at Children's National Medical Center.
Since May was the month we lost Mike and is also Brain Tumor Awareness Month, the family established a time each year to come together with Mike's friends, family and colleagues to honor the great man that he was, have some fun, and donate the proceeds to a good cause. The tournament was held on Monday, May 23, at the International Country Club, in Fairfax, VA.
My husband and I volunteered for the day helping with player registration and check in, selling raffle tickets, setting up the silent auction, not to mention setting up the ballroom with flowers, registration table, apparel sales table, etc. It was so much fun and a lot of work. Mike's children did a terrific job in organizing this tournament.
There were a total of 160 golf players and 200 for dinner. Raffle tickets were $1 each and there were 41 raffle items, and six silent auction items. There were also charitable donations made by those that could not attend.
Mike Windsor loved children and he and his wife Susette would visit the Children's Hospital at Christmas. So, of course, in Mike's memory, all proceeds .... $30,000 ... from the tournament benefits the Brain Tumor Institute at Children's National Medical Center.
Besides volunteering, my husband and I wanted to help in some way...so I asked Jeff Kmiec, president of The Greenbrier for a donation for this tournament, and received two Weekly Grounds Badges for the 2011 Greenbrier Classic. A big THANK YOU to the Greenbrier for the tickets.
I know that Mike looked down on this day and smiled.... it was indeed a great day! Mike you are truly missed!
