Last night I received a call from Donna DeHart, Director of Development for Habitat for Humanity of West Virginia. She was waiting for a van bringing 15 teenagers from Pendleton County to White Sulphur Springs to volunteer for the Greenbrier Classic for the rest of the week. On the way, the van caught on fire. Thankfully, no one was hurt! But, the van was destroyed and they lost everything in the fire. Their clothes, cameras, phones, sleeping bags, and other personal items all burned with the van.
Another van was sent from Virginia to get the volunteers. Donna wasn't sure if the the volunteers would want to turn around and go back home. If so we would seriously be hurting for volunteers to replace them. She asked if I had any ideas?
I got the message around 9:00 PM and called Donna. The volunteers had decided to stay and were all at Walmart buying clothes, underwear, tennis shoes, etc. I had blankets to provide if they needed them, but the Red Cross had brought them blankets. I offered my house to any that wanted to stay with me since I had three empty bedrooms. If needed, I told her I had a queen-sized air mattress. But, they all wanted to stay together at the Habitat House.
I will be seeing Donna tomorrow, and by then she will let me know what they need. I have baked some brownies for the volunteers in hopes it will cheer them up.

It must be hard losing all your personal things while away from home. I thank my lucky stars that I've never been a victim of a fire.... Perhaps my brownies will bring a smile to their faces.
