January brings a flurry of activities to The Greenbrier, beginning with the inaugural Winterfest Weekend, January 7-9. Nationally recognized ice carvers will compete in 
individual and team carving competitions. Golfers of all ages can test their skills in the Snow Golf Tournament while diamond connoisseurs can appreciate the exquisite beauty of Roberto Coin’s Cento Collection. As an added treat, the state’s only synchronized skating team, West Virginia Synchro, will perform on Saturday and Sunday. This weekend also marks the debut of the resort’s Comedy Night and a cabaret of popular American show tunes.
Non-registered guests may purchase tickets for the Winterfest Weekend for $15 per person per day. In addition to the ice carving events, non-registered guests will receive a $15 voucher which may be applied to one retail, activity or dining purchase on the same day. The voucher is only valid for the day of the Winterfest ticket.
Ice Carving: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 7-9
The centerpiece of the Winterfest Weekend is the National Ice Carving Association sanctioned event on the front lawn. Sixteen of the country’s best ice carvers, including several Olympic medal winners, will vie for individual and team honors.
- On Friday, 2:00-5:30 pm - the talented carvers will each transform a block of ice into their own creation.
- On Saturday, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm - The team competition will be held as eight, two-man teams will create sculptures from four blocks of ice in just five hours.
- On Sunday, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm - individual competition will feature 15 carvers as they design their own magical masterpieces in four hours.
Greenbrier Avenue Jewelry will feature a different kind of ice with a Roberto Coin Cento Collection Trunk Show. Coin’s “Cento” diamond is a true masterpiece as its innovative and patented cut sparkles with almost double the facets of a traditional round brilliant cut. Roberto Coin representative Susan Burcham will host fascinating diamond seminars throughout the weekend.
1st Annual Winterfest Snow Golf Challenge - January 8, Saturday, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Golfers who want to challenge the elements and their game can participate in the resort’s first ever Snow Golf Tournament. This two-hole individual stroke play event will be held on the Meadows Course’s #1 and #18 holes. The $10 per person entry fee includes colored golf balls and a group photograph. Prizes will be awarded in this fun winter golf competition. Participants may register at the Tennis Club.
Comedy Show - January 7, Friday at 8:30 pm
Professional comedians Matt Wohlfarth and Billy Robinson will tickle your funny bone on Friday, January 7 beginning at 8:30 pm in the Theatre. Wolfarth’s Midlife Crisis Comedy Tour, which he started in 2005, offers audiences a laugh vacation from parenthood. In contrast, Robinson’s biting sense of humor mocks the hypocrisy of life’s trials and tribulations. Tickets for the show are $20 per person; recommended for ages 18 and older.
“The Great American Songbook Series” - January 8, Saturday at 8:30 pm
From the parent of musical theatre comedy, George M. Cohan, to the great American composers of today, such as Wicked’s Stephen Schwartz, American musicals have been popular for more than a century. The Greenbrier’s own New York entertainers present “The Great American Songbook Series” January 8, 11, 13, 15, 18, 20, 25, 27, 29 at 8:30 pm in the Theatre. January's performances feature the music of Oscar Hammerstein II, Jerome Kern, Richard Rogers, and Lorenz Hart from beloved musicals such as Show Boat, Pal Joey, Oklahoma!, Carousel, The King and I, South Pacific and The Sound of Music. Tickets for this spectacular revue are $20 per person.
Jane Powell in the Casino Club's Twelve Oaks Lunge, Friday and Saturday, 9:00 pm
Roanoke ’s Jane Powell will share her soulful, vocal stylings in the Casino Club’s Twelve Oaks lounge on Friday and Saturday evening. Her musical flexibility, open and playful personality, and often spicy and spontaneous sense of humor, easily captivates and entertains.
Ice Skating - January 8-9, Saturday and Sunday
The state’s only synchronized skating team, West Virginia Synchro, will be performing.
Also, the Greenbrier’s new 70’ x 140’ ice skating rink is now open to the public Monday through Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm, Friday from 4:00 to 10:00 pm and Sunday 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. The ice rink charge is $20 per adult and $10 per child (ages 16 and under) and skate rentals fees are $28 per adult and $14 per child. The resort’s skating professional, Robbie Baker, will offer instruction clinics on Friday at 8:00 pm and Saturday at 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Cost for the clinics is included with the ice rink charge.
Access to the Casino Club is included with the purchase of Winterfest, Comedy Night and Great American Songbook Series tickets.
