The Kids Come First! Golf Tournament is an annual fundraiser of Communities In Schools of Greenbrier County (CISGC). This event is June 18-19, 2011, and will be the 6th Annual Kids Come First Celebrity Golf Tournament, and will be held at the Greenbrier Resort.
The golf tournament, which began in 2005, consists of two days of activities at America’s Resort including an evening reception and live auction as well as a Sunday post play luncheon. The event is the only one in West Virginia that matches amateurs with celebrities and has raised more than $60,000 over the past five years.
While celebrity guests are still being confirmed, previous participants have included Troy Aikman, Daryl Johnston, Dell Curry, Chad Pennington, Virginia Tech’s Seth Greenberg, and Branford Marsalis. “The celebrities certainly set our event apart – allowing them to give back and allowing our attendees the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play alongside them.” said Emily Haas, director of CISGC.
The change of venue also allows players to play on yet another of The Greenbrier’s great links, The Greenbrier Course. The course, originally constructed in 1924 by Seth Raynor, was redesigned in 1977 by golf great Jack Nicklaus. The Greenbrier is the only resort course in the country to have hosted the Ryder Cup (1979) and the Solheim Cup (1994). “It will be an exciting time to be at The Greenbrier,” remarked Robert Harris, director of golf emeritus. “With just a month to go before the PGA TOUR event returns, players will have a view of our final preparations.”

A pre-tournament reception and auction will kick-off the event, featuring live music, heavy hors d’oeuvres, adult beverages, a live auction and the pairing of celebrities to teams. “For the non-golfer, the reception event is the perfect way to meet the celebrities and have a chance to bid at the event’s popular live auction which features an extensive array of autographed sports memorabilia and once-in-a-lifetime trips.” said Haas. Tickets for this part of the event can be purchased separately for $75 per person.
Those interested in playing in the tournament may register solo or in teams, at a rate of $500 per player. This fee includes cart rental, on-course refreshments, reception on Saturday evening and the Player’s Luncheon following the tournament on Sunday. All activities will take place at The Greenbrier.
The celebrity golf tournament is the largest fundraiser for Communities In Schools, an organization that implements a stay-in-school message and community members mentoring for student success.
