Greenbrier Antique Show Starts Today

The Greenbrier Annual Antique Show starts today and continues through October 31, 2010.

Access to the floor exhibits and sale for the next few days are:

  • Daily pass:  $10 per person
  • 3-day pass (Friday, Saturday and Sunday)  $15 per person

Opening Night Welcome and Preview Party was last night.... Thursday, October 28, and was a big success. I attended this event, and had a great time visiting each of the booths, taking photos, enjoying the Greenbrier's delicious food, and meeting folks from Pennsylvania, Florida, Maryland, Virginia, and New York.

paper mache toy dogsThe photo to the left are children toys - French Bulldogs called Growlers.  Made in Paris, France in 1900; made of papier-mâché, with glass eyes and are on wooden wheels.  Their heads move and they growl.

All I can say is that children today would have these toys destroyed within ten minutes.  Makes you wonder how children played in the 1900s.  The dog on the left is priced at  $2,400 and the one on the right is $2,500.

I love lamps, and there were many at the show; but, the two below caught my eye.

Tiffany Lampparrot lamp

The original Tiffany Lamp from Tiffany Studios, NY  C.1905; Signed shade and base "Peony" $350,000.  The Parrots lamp is from the Toulouse Antique Gallery and is a classic table lamp, American, C.1910, $14,000.

I would love to write about each photo I took, but since that is somewhat impossible, please view the antiques in the video below:

Don't forget to check out the "First Ladies' Inaugural Gowns" made by Ms. Dina Arzt (see photo below).  The gowns are exact replicas of the gowns worn by some of the First Ladies of the United States to their husbands' Inaugural Ball.  Ms. Arzt meticulously studied the originals which are exhibited in glass cases at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.  Ms. Arzt is a fashion designer from Warsaw, Poland.  In 1974, Strawbridge and Clothier asked her to copy the gowns of 12 First Ladies for a planned Bicentennial display.  Working seven days a week, she duplicated all 38 gowns.  She then set up her own First Lady's Arzt Museum in Philadelphia.

Looking for that special antique piece, you may find it at the antique show.  Be sure and attend one day or all weekend you will be amazed at all the antiques and history at the show.  The photos can not compare to seeing these antiques in person.  Hope to see you there.
