How Dad's Life Changed on an Autumn Night

Mom and DadWhen you are young and full of life, you never think about losing your parents because they are always there for you. My parents are both deceased now.  This post is about my Dad and how his life changed on a warm autumn night.

My parents, Myrtle and Louie Vasvary married in 1931.  My mother was the sweetest, loving Christian woman you would want to meet.  She married my dad at the age of 17. Mom accepted people for who they were as demonstrated by her constant prayers, understanding, and patience for those she loved.  My dad was the one that she had the most patience for.

Mom was a dedicated church member and repeatedly asked my dad to go to church with her. He, as always, refused to go.  My mothers' prayer was that dad would accept Jesus as his personal Savior, before she died.

My dad, was a foreman in the coal mines and he worked really hard to provide for his family.   His only vise was cards.  He loved to gamble, and would choose cards over mother's pleas to attend church with her and the family.

One late autumn night in 1966, the church was holding its regular revival meeting.  This particular night, dad wanted to play cards and mother wanted him to go to church with her, but he chose cards.  He inquired into money for the game and mother said,  "where it always is, in the Bible."  Dad got the money, called a cab and went to play cards. Of course, Mom and kids went to church.

On the way to the card game, something strange happened. Dad asked the cab driver to turn around and take him to the Bluewell Methodist Church.  The sermon was still in progress when my dad opened the church doors and walked down the aisle to sit with his loving and patient wife.  That night in autumn, Dad accepted Jesus as his Savior and my mother's prayers were answered.

The following year, mom died of pancreatic cancer at the young age of 53  leaving behind to cherish her memories were her husband, her 11 children, and her church family.  Dad was left alone with teenagers in the home and a check book that he could not balance.  He learned to function as a single parent, with the help of God, family, and his church family.

My dad, once a gambling man, grew in Christ.  His children and church were the most important things in his life.  He gave his time, energy and money to his church.

During church services, my dad was the first to stand up and tell all about how God changed his life.  His testimony was ALWAYS about how he gained a loving God and lost a loving wife all in the same year.  He never tired of giving his testimony and no one ever got tired of listening to him praise God.

Dad was diagnosed with silicosis (black lung) in 1962 and died in 2000 at the age of 88 due to complications from this disease.

In a little corner of West Virginia, known as Bluewell, my dad is remembered by all his acts of kindness, and the man who never knew a stranger.  My dad was able to extend his hand to all through the grace of God and his love for all of God's children. This was my dad's testimony to all who would listen.  I know that my mother was listening.  AND, on that autumn night, Dad was also listening.

Loving and missing you Dad.
