Winter in West Virginia Poem

WV winter pix

        It's winter in West Virginia

        And the gentle breezes blow
        Seventy miles an hour
        At twenty-five below.

Oh, how I love West Virginia
When the snow's up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut.

Yes, the weather here is wonderful
So I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave West Virginia
'Cause I'm frozen to the ground

Even with the cold and snow, Coldwell Banker Stuart and Watts, Lewisburg, WV, had a very good December.  And, so far, January is not so bad for buying and selling real estate.

Author of the above poem is unknown.

Lunch With Friends at the General Lewis Inn, Lewisburg WV

BunchOur good friends, Ronda and Sam Bunch, were visiting us this weekend from Gainesville, VA.  They were celebrating their 8th wedding anniversary with us.

After attending church services at the Lewisburg United Methodist Church, we decided to have lunch at the General Lewis Inn, an antique filled Inn and Restaurant in Historic Lewisburg, West Virginia.  It was snowing, and since the Inn is located across the street from the church, we walked over laughing and feeling giddy in the snow.

Our friends loved the historic country Inn and restaurant.  We took a short tour of the Inn. The rooms, if unoccupied, are left open, as an invitation to browse through the rooms.   All the guest rooms are furnished with antiques.   Spool and canopy beds, chests of drawers, quilts, old cupboards filled with early glass, pottery, and china, old prints and other memorabilia are throughout the Inn.

We passed Memory Hall which displays many tools and articles used by early settlers. Memorabilia of the resourcefulness of mountain pioneers are displayed in Memory Hall's collections of tools, guns, household utensils and musical instruments.  Many are handmade relics fashioned from parts of covered wagons.

Genera Lewis Inn

The historic General Lewis is a unique blend of the old and the new, created and operated by the Hock family since 1929.   The Inn and the town of Lewisburg are named after General Andrew Lewis.

When you travel to West Virginia, please add Lewisburg and the General Lewis Inn to your list of places to visit.  You will be glad you did.

Don't Believe Everything You Receive Via Email

As we all know, your identity can be stolen on the Internet. I wanted to write about a Government employee and a hoax Email.

pillsLast week I had received an email regarding COSTCO and generic drug price gouging by pharmacies.  The email got my attention, and so I read the article.  But at the bottom of the article were the person's name, her title, her Government agency, room number, email address, and office telephone and office fax numbers.  Now, not only was all this information included in the signature of this message, but the U.S. Department of Commerce's SEAL was there as well.

NOW, this REALLY got my attention.  Being a retired Department of Commerce/NOAA employee, I knew emails like this did not go out to the public.  So, I called this person, and asked if the article was sent by her.  Her answer was ABSOLUTELY NOT!

She stated to me, "I had absolutely nothing to do with the research or writing of this article. As I've discovered, it is very easy to have your identity stolen on the internet, and in this case, someone has used my name as a government employee to try to validate this email."

She has had to change her office phone numbers, and remove her title, and other information from her email signature.  The U.S. Department of Commerce's Seal is never added in a public email message.  The person(s) writing this hoax downloaded the seal from the Commerce web site.

I'm not going into detail about what was in the email, but you can read about this hoax, at the following website http://www.breakthechain.org/exclusives/genericrx.html

emaiilI was told early in life don't believe everything you read, and that goes for EVERYTHING WE RECEIVE VIA E-MAIL.

P.S. - If you receive an email, and not sure of its authenticity, go to www.snopes.com

I Said NO to an Interest Only Mortgage - But, No One Was Listening

After leaving my real estate office today, I stopped by the First National Bank to talk with Loan Officer,Dianne Beale Diane Beale.  I was reminiscing about the first day I met Dianne, and decided to write a blog about our first meeting, and my terrible, stressful, settlement day.

When applying for a mortgage, one of the first things you are asked is "What type of loan do you want"?

Well, here is what happened to me.  We had finished building our home in Lewisburg, West Virginia.  Now the construction loan had to be turned into a regular mortgage.  I started looking around and found a mortgage lender and liked the rates, so we started the paper work.

The closing was to be on a Friday morning. I walked into the attorney's office and was immediately informed that there was a problem.  The paperwork was for an interest-only mortgage.  I couldn't believe this, as I clearly told the person at this mortgage company that I wanted a 30-year fixed rate at least twice, if not more, during our conversations.

What was I to do now?  The builder thought he would have his money that day.  Fortunately for me, the attorney's assistant suggested I take the package, go to First National Bank, and talk with Loan Officer, Dianne Beale.

                                           I did just that!

First National BankI walked into the bank, and went to Dianne's office.    NO WAITING!  Can you believe that?!!     I told her what had happened and that I was not going to settlement with that lender.  I asked her about the options and she gave me a variety of choices for our mortgage.  Imagine, having choices!  Could she do the loan?  NO PROBLEM!

Dianne was so helpful and understanding, getting the loan through within five days.  Friday she had the paperwork, and by the following Friday morning - we went to settlement with a 30-year fixed rate mortgage.  What a relief, Dianne came through for us. And, my builder, McCoy Builders, was so understanding.

I didn't think this could be done in this small town of Lewisburg, West Virginia.  Dianne Beale and First National Bank was indeed a life saver for us, and most importantly......THEY LISTENED TO WHAT I WANTED.

If you need a loan or refinancing, call Diane Beale at (304) 647-5051

A Wedding on New Year’s Eve – What a Celebration!

What a way to celebrate New Year's Eve.   We attended two great events on this day.  First, our nephew, got married in Lewisburg, WV.  It was a small wedding held at the Lewisburg United Methodist Church.   The bride had changed clothes after the photo shots of the wedding party, but wore the bridal veil all evening.

 Greenbrier

Secondly, we attended the reception dinner held at the Greenbrier Resort,  The Greenbrier, is an award winning, five-diamond luxury resort and hotel in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

This was really a special New Year's Eve, and a great way to ring in the New Year!  Celebrating a wedding, and dinner and dancing at this great resort.

I hope you all had a Happy New Year's Eve night, and spent it either in the quietness of your cozy home with family, or celebrated the evening with a bang, as we did.

Party

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous year in 2009.
